Supporting local communities on their common governance of natural resources
One of the initiatives that bring us to the European Commons Assembly is to support communities to build up an European network of communities governing common lands, waters and other natural resources. The "baldíos" are a clear example for Portugal, and there are many others in Spain (see www.icomunales.org), the "crofts" in Scotland, the "faceries" in France, among many others throughout Europe. As many of these communities are quite isolated but, at the same time facing many common threats at EU level (as for example detrimental European policies, intensification, privatization or rural depopulation), we think that the answer should be approached commonly too.
