    1. 1. Welcome to the Commons Space pad.
    • Commons Space is an official self managed thematic committee**

_In the spirit of the forum, the program of events is open for your input and collaboration. Below you will find a list of the events that are in the organizing progress. We use this page to prepare and finalize the activities together and make connections between them. We invite you to take part and propose your own ideas, suggestions, wording, links, etc. This page does not intend to replace the official World Social Forum website – it is a tool to facilitate articulation and planning around the commons. _

Commons Space is a place for experimentation, exchange and construction of commons based alternatives to the current economic model. This space will welcome and support the strategic process of convergence of commoners and social movements throughout the WSF.** **Our home base is at ECTO co-working space, 936 Avenue Mont Royal Est, second floor.

    • DOCUMENTATION NOTES**

It is important that every activity also involves some parallel form of documentation. Some will be big, others will be small.

The page dedicated to Documentation is : [Documentation Commons ](/lcNc3Sv4Owv#:h=Cards-game-on-the-commons)[Space](/Documentation-Commons-Space-lcNc3Sv4Owv#)

In terms of collaboration in this arena, the resources we have are:

  • Following meeting with Alain, Yves, Stephanie and Matthieu Rheaume, some notes:[ Documentation Commons Space](https://commonsspace.hackpad.com/lcNc3Sv4Owv)
  • Activity #18 is in itself a form of documentation (radio broadcast). We could also imagine some other outputs from activities themselves, such as Mapping, etc.
  • Contact with Erika and Beatrice from Forum des Media Libres, although they will be busy with their own forum before the conference. Beatrice may be able to serve as a liasion.
  • Frederic and Nicole need to relaunch Les Petits débrouillards
  • Santiago Hoerth, potential to do recording in Spanish. (Costa Rica/Arg.) - maybe not nec.
    • Activities that don't yet have their own separate pads:**

      • 3.13. EDGE**

Meeting of the members of EDGE

      • 3.14. Commons Game**

Commoners around the world work on different topics and use different approaches, but they all share a same vision : they are "building alternatives". However they do not necessarily know each other, nor have ever had the opportunity to share their experiences. This game sessions aims at making commonalities and differences emerge in order to reinforce or even build bridges among commoners. The game will take place within the commons space, it could be replicated and its outcomes will contribute to a convergence debate about the Commons. General notes: – calm place for the game would be nice!! – meeting Silke and Elisabetta; on August 9 / 9am→ print/ write/ cut out the questions , check if all the materials are visible for everybody entering ECTO and if ppl can easily understand how to use them. prepare a space for feedback on CONNECTIONS and the POSITIONING DYNAMICS/ GAME… – send the questions to Kevin → ask Kevin if questions are OK (external feedback is important) – NO DETAILS OF OUR PLANS SHOULD GO INTO THE COMMONS SPACE PROGRAMME; JUST THE GENERAL DESCRIPTION! + TITLES xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx CONNECTIONS CONNECTIONS: The process lasts for the whole WSF. It is designed to connect with each other and to create short in-between-moments of common reflection on the commons. Participants themselves choose their right moment to engage in CONNECTIONS. NEEDS: It just requires cards, markers and paper board/flipchart and something to pin o stick it there. FUNCTIONING:  ; A person picks a question and asks that question to another person s/he doesn’t know yet.  ; Both have a short conversation on the issue for 5-10 minutes (if it lasts longer, fine!).  ; Both decide how to put the answer on the material prepared by the organizers.  ; If people wish so, they are invited to put their names on the answer as well.  ; The person who picked the question makes sure the answer will be visible on the public board (or write it on the flipchart, depending on the materials available).  ; All the answers remain visible within Common Space throughout the WSF.  ; Questions cards can be changed. IMPORTANT: People are invited to repeat this as many times as they want, i.e. ask several questions to several people! On the flipchard/board there will be space for feedback. Everybody is invited to share how it went/ what s/he felt and suggest improvements. ENJOY, THINK TOGETHER & CONNECT! COMMONS GAME IDEA: The dynamic is based on facilitation/warm up techniques. It lasts around 90 minutes. It takes place at least once, but could be repeated if successful. It requires a quiet (not necessarily closed) space and… participants. FUNCTIONNING: The organizers ask a question and determine “fixed positions” in the space as reference points. Then, people are asked to position themselves in the space on two (creating a line) or three (creating a “triangle”) or even four (creating a coordinate system) positions. People can position themselves at any point of the space. There are not right or wrong answers (of course!). Once everybody found its position, participants observe the result for a moment. The organizers facilitate a short reflexion, f.i. They invite some participants to explain their position. The dynamic will end with an open conversation among those small groups who stand together after answering question 10. FACILITATION: rotating between Elisabetta and Silke (if one asks, the other one facilitates the short reflection moment) Organizers: [Elisabetta Cangelosi](https://commonsspace.hackpad.com/ep/profile/nqgHio6lJsA) (and [HELFRICH Silke](https://commonsspace.hackpad.com/ep/profile/w0UpYPlKoxG)) [This session doesn't require a slot: it is planned as a game, to take place whitin the commons space, maybe in the same room that will be used for the mapping. I take responsibility for it. It is to be connected to the idea (approved?) of creating a space where people can write about the commons. The outcomes should "converge" in the panel session on the commons, to further converge with other committees, such as AESS)

      • _What_**

Self-organized open assembly to discuss and launch a world-wide and open process for the wiki writing of a polycentric, multi-layered and peer to peer "Charter of the Forest" for the global commons. The invite is open to all commoners who like to join and collaborate in person and / or via online tools and spaces we use. Ideally we imagine one discussion round for exchanging ideas on the challenges, and possibilities for such a global collaborative writing project, its design, content and function, and one more round on the tools that can be used to effectively realize and move forward the wiki / peer production of a polycentric, multi-lingual, and multi-dimensional text. (Chantal Delmas, and Christian Pilichowski,Theodora Kotsaka,,united state unionists, cooperation Jackson, HELFRICH Silke, Jason Nardi, Kevin Flanagan)

      • 3.22. The social commons**

(Global Social Justice, Transform!, Network for Transformative Social Protection, Social Forum on Health and Social Security ... ?) Global Financial Institutions are now promoting their kind of ‘social protection’: a minimalist programme, targeted on the poor, with purely economic objectives and totally compatible with neoliberalism. Till now, all over the world, most reactions are limited to a defence of the status quo, that is the old welfare states. However, these old systems do not satisfy all current needs anymore, especially with the important changes in the economic system. In this workshop, we want to discuss two alternatives: social commons on the one hand, a participatory and democratic way to decide on social protection, and the universal basic income, a simple system of equal allowances for all. Speakers:Francine Mestrum,Theodora Kotsaka,,Lucie ?,Katie Robbins(PHM US),Tina(NTSP),Belgian Trade Unions,Emilie Robert,Zoltan,Pablo

      • 3.23. Universal health and social security systems**

In spite of all current changes in the way of thinking on social protection, the ‘old’ way of organizing the achievement of all economic and social rights can still be further improved, especially since the newest trends promoted by global financial institutions are aimed at targeting the poor. How can we promote universal health care? How to raise awareness on the need of this universalism and how to organize it? In this workshop will be discussed the experiences with the political laboratories organized in Latin America. Speaker:Armando,Yves Hellendorf,FGTB,Katie Robin(PHM US),Maris(NTSP),Emilie Robert,Ali Talbaa(FTDES),Lucie,Zoltan,Pablo,Vittorio Agnoletto

    • seems better during the lunch breack
    • I suggest that session #4 (coops takes place on wed 10 morning slot, and #21 (commons and production) on the same day afternoon slot. I assumed, in proposing slots that we are talking about one session per slot (even though 2hours 30 it's a lot) so those who have same speakers are on different slots. However, if we have two sessions per slot this can be modified. (for ex. #23 and#22 can go together, one after the other, same for #4 and #21 and maybe also #5 and #6 : all of them are "twins" sessions, with some connection one to the other.
    • I suggest that : First we define the general agenda / organization of the days and Second we will be able to attribute each slot for one specific activity.

      1. Q&A:

    ADD YOUR QUESTION!!

THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HELP CLARIFYING THINGS FOR EVERYBODY INVOLVED!

      • 1. PROGRAMME:**

Will somebody make sure, that these activities appear in the programme of the WSF?

Some of them are included, but not all and we need to check which one are included and not. Below, we have 2 parts in this page : activities registered and not registered. I (Frédéric) think that some are not in the right category.

--> 1.a.: How do deal with the unregistered activities?

As the registration of activity is closed, we have to "register" other activities. It is one of the objectives of this webpage.

      • 2. PUBLICITY: **

As in many previous WSF, some ppl print their own "propaganda"; as the official WSF programm usually is extremely complex, lacks detailed information and is not up to date. Do we have an opportunity to print and hand out a "commons space programme" for distribution in situ?

This possibility is open. It is not decided yet what will be the tools of communication : paper, website, information spread in the social media of the WSF and other.

      • 3.MEETING SPACE:**

Will the ECTO co-working space, 936 Avenue Mont Royal Est, second floor be the "official" meeting space for all commoners throughout the Forum? Accessible from ? till?.

And will there be also a physical space for the Commons Space AT the Forum? If so, where?

ECTO co-working space, 936 Avenue Mont Royal Est will be the home base for the commons and the commoners. No idea if there is any other possibility in the WSF. Anyway, Ecto is not far from where the WSF will take place (UQAM).

      • 4.REGULAR MEETINGS**

Informal coordination is great, however: if there is a daily meeting at a certain hour for all those who potentially wish to talk to each other - it's even greater. Will there be a "commoning space for commoners", say, at 7:30 pm each night at ECTO? Without agenda, of course. Just a fix meeting point and time to share experiences. If there are 3 ppl. Fine. If there are 13. Marvellous. And if there are more... is the best one.

Before the WSF, we are using digital tools to interact : a serie of Hackpad pages, a Slack session and Trello. Ask for being registered. During the WSF a morning circle is proposed each 8:00 AM at ECTO.
